Circle into the future
Our sense of time has become confused. We know that our current path towards future progress leads to catastrophe. Radical change is vital, but this requires time for careful development and negotiation. So, we dream nostalgically of a better past, aware that we must dare look to an uncertain future.
On Rapperswiler Tag 2024, we will be asking what the future holds for the district.
Learning from the past while still believing in a new future? Rebuilding cities without consuming new resources, thanks to repurposing, repairing, and reusing materials? Can regenerative cycles be designed with the help of nature? Does minimal intervention and the preservation of what already exists lead to innovative solutions? What strategies enable prudent change? Care? Social innovations? Tinkering?
For one day, we will circle around surprising ideas for a scaled down life on a limited planet — by means of historical perspectives and future-oriented manifestos. Activist, do-it-yourself design will inspire us just as much as the reform movement of the 1900s. Above all, we hope to discover what the circular economy can mean for our profession, based on current landscape architecture projects from Germany and abroad.
